EVENT ARCHIVE :
Tuner Grand Prix
Hockenheimring
Hockenheim, Germany
May 10, 2008
It appeared as though this year’s single-lap battle Tuner GP was going to look much the same as last year’s event. That was until TechArt rolled into the paddock and unveiled their new machines.
While looking reasonably similar to the TechArt GT Street, this model, the RS, is based off of the GT2 platform. Last year’s winner, Cargraphic, wasn’t ready to go down without a fight, however, and while they brought along the four-liter GT3 that took the GT Class Championship last year, they also had a turbocharged surprise.
Driven by Marc Basseng to a 1:09,946 lap time, the Cargraphic Turbo looked like it had the fastest lap, outpacing the company’s GT3 by almost three seconds.
But then TechArt hotshoe Jörg Hardt took the GT Street RS around the Hockenheimring track in 1:06,811 – out-hustling Basseng and his Cargraphic car by just over a tenth of a second.
In recent years competition at the Tuner GP has diminished somewhat but we predicted that for 2008 some of the big players from year’s past would be back. Now that TechArt has made claim to the prize, perhaps we’ll see Gemballa back in 2009 to give them some added competition.
For the full story and all the results (including where the MTM supercharged R8 placed), be sure to pick up the August issue of Modified Luxury & Exotics.
