SEMA 2007 DAY 1
Las Vegas, Nevada
October 30, 2007 Story & Photos: Colum Wood
Undoubtedly the biggest story on day one of the SEMA Show was the first ever SEMA press conference for Lexus. Announcing the F-Sport performance and styling packages for the IS350 and IS250 as well as the 5 Axis modified IS-F, Lexus was easily the star of the show. For the IS line Lexus will offer 19-inch wheels, a performance intake and exhaust kit as well as a full suspension package (with shocks, springs, larger sway bars and a chassis brace) and even upgraded brakes (including six-piston front calipers). Lexus also plans to offer a composite brake kit for the IS-F. All these parts will be built by TRD.
The 5 Axis vehicle, however, easily stole the show with wide fenders, matte black paint and the promise of a more powerful naturally aspirated engine in the works. According to 5 Axis owner Troy Sumitomo the reworked IS-F should have over 500 hp by the time it makes its next appearance at the Detroit Auto Show.
Hamann's New Partner
3T Motorsport called a press conference Tuesday afternoon to announce that they are Hamann's new distribution partner for the USA. Richard Hamann was on hand and was clear in stating how excited he was to make a new push into the US market. Hamann execs reconfirmed that they will be focusing on ultra high end sports cars in the future and did mention that they will have a very special project to unveil at Essen in just a few weeks.
Pirelli partners with Rolex Grand Am Series
Pirelli took advantage of the throngs of journalists present at the show to announce that they have partnered with the Rolex Grand Am Series for the 2008 to 2010 series. Paul Henry, Global Motor Sports Director for Pirelli was present for the announcement and stated that Pirelli will be in full force at the first race of the season in Daytona, which coincidentally is the same weekend as the first race of the WRC season in Monaco.Combined, the two races will consume 25000 Pirelli tires!
Platinum Motorsport
One exceptional vehicle at the show was the Platinum Motorsport Bentley at the Toyo booth. With a world priemiere of the Invader bodykit the Continental GT looked as mean as its bi-turbo W12 engine.
